STEP Resources LLC is a newly formed entity bringing two experienced management and operational teams, Edge Resources and Patterson Energy, together to focus on oil and gas development primarily in Texas. Having weathered the ups and downs of the business for many decades the principals know how to negotiate fair and equitable deals with mineral owners and service providers and keep operational costs low by managing efficiently.
STEP’s business model is to use proved methods of extraction but maximize profits by utilizing best F&D practices, in terms of research and engineering combined with today’s technology.
Robert E. Patterson, P.E. – Partner
Robert has over 38 years of North American experience in the sub engineering disciplines of Drilling, Completion, Workover, Construction, and Reservoir Engineering. He founded Patterson Energy Corporation in 2001 and has extensive operational involvement and participation in all parts of the state but with a focus on South Texas where he has drilled and completed approximately 400 wells. Patterson Energy is an exploration and Production Company; a consulting petroleum engineering and operations supervising company; natural gas treating plant operator; water distribution business; and a roustabout and construction company. Additionally, his career has taken him to all parts of the US and Canada. Prior to starting Patterson, Robert was a Principal at Canyon Oil and Gas Exploration, LLC; Vice President of Operations at Abraxas Petroleum Corporation; Division Operations Manager at Parker and Parsley Petroleum; and a drilling engineer at Hilliard Oil and Gas and Texas Pacific Oil Company.
Robert graduated from the University of Texas – Austin in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering.
Stephen B. Owen – Partner
Steve is a Certified Public Accountant with extensive experience in the oil and gas industry. Most recently he has been the Chief Financial Officer at Patterson Energy Corporation with all financial responsibilities including revenue and JIB processing. Prior to that he was President at One Cypress Advisory Solutions, LLC, a business consulting firm; CFO at Reveille Resources (Texas), Inc., a publicly traded oil & gas production company where he initiated and developed all bank credit facilities and was responsible for all financial reporting to shareholders; Partner at McGinnis, Owen & Berger LLP, a regional accounting firm; and CFO at Midstates Oil & Gas Inc., an oil & gas production company. Steve has provided bankruptcy accounting services for creditors and debtors as well as consulted clients on capital acquisitions for both debt and equity transactions. Steve is a member of the Independent Petroleum Association of America; Council of Petroleum Accountants Societies; and Turnaround Management Association.
Steve holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from the University of Texas – Arlington.
Brad Pittman – Partner
Brad Pittman, a founding partner of Edge Resources, has 35 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. Initially employed at American Quasar Petroleum for 6 years, Brad was part of a securities team that raised in excess of $300 million for exploration in the United States and Canada. Later, while at Clements Energy, an Oklahoma City based oil and gas exploration company, Brad held the title of National Marketing Director until the company was sold to Nerco, a Portland, Oregon-based coal company. Brad also was co-founder of Alamosa Oil and Gas, a Fort Worth based oil and gas exploration and Development Company that conducted operations in north Texas and Mississippi, prior to forming Edge Resources L.L.C.
Brad holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Management from the University of Mississippi.
Mike Martinez – Partner
Mike Martinez, a founding partner of Edge Resources, has extensive leasing and operational experience in the industry. With 17 years of experience, Mike has negotiated more than 2,000 leases accounting for more than 25,000 acres in the multi-county Barnett Shale field. Additionally, Mike has had a participating interest in the drilling and completion of more than 50 Barnett wells to date. Mike was an instrumental part of the success in the accumulation of leasehold inventory while at Four Sevens Oil Company. The sales of these properties were in excess of $1 billion dollars. Mike has also consulted with XTO, Finley Resources, mineral owners, and oil & gas attorneys, among others.
Mike, a Fort Worth native, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government from the University of Texas at Austin.
Juan Villarreal – Director of Title
Juan Villarreal leads our title & mineral research department. Juan is responsible for ensuring all leased property is free & clear to be drilled. Juan has been working in the Barnett Shale since 2003, and because of his extensive experience in the industry, Juan is considered to be among the top title landmen in the play. Juan has held landmen training roles for a handful of companies, including Four Sevens Oil & Gas and Chesapeake Operating.
Juan, after graduating high school received collegiate education from Texas Christian University.
Tim Martinez – Director of Land
Since the early 2000’s, Tim has extensive leasing and land experience in the industry. With all his years of experience, Tim has negotiated tens of thousands of leases accounting for more than tens of thousands of acres in the multi-county Barnett Shale field. Additionally, Tim has had a participating interest in the drilling and completion of more than 50 Barnett wells to date. Tim was an instrumental part of the success in the accumulation of leasehold inventory while at Four Sevens Oil Company. The sales of these properties were in excess of $1 billion dollars. Before he began with Edge Resources and after his departure from Four Sevens, Tim began acquiring leases for David H. Arrington Oil & Gas, Inc. and quickly became one of Arrington’s top Barnett Shale producers. Beyond acquiring leases, Tim has also privately consulted with mineral owners, and oil & gas attorneys, among others.
Tim, a Fort Worth native, after graduating high school received collegiate education from the Art Institute of Dallas.
Dwayne Purvis, P.E. – Consulting Engineer
Dwayne Purvis, P.E. has spent over two decades in reservoir engineering and executive leadership as a consultant and operator. He has led or participated in hundreds of field studies and reserve analyses over dozens of basins in the United States and abroad, and he has participated in the sale or acquisition of projects valued from tens of thousands to billions of dollars. Before starting his own consulting practice in 2015, he served Jetta Operating Company as Reservoir Engineering Manager and Reserves Manager. Prior roles include founder and Executive Vice President of consulting firm The Strickland Group and partner at Cawley, Gillespie & Associates. Dwayne has published on issues of reserves, risk analysis and shale reservoirs. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Texas, member of SPEE, AAPG, SEG and a 25-year member of SPE.
Dwayne graduated, Magna Cum Laude, from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering.
